Skincare During Pregnancy: What Is Safe and What to Avoid

Safe gentle skincare routine during pregnancy

Pregnancy prompts more questions about skincare safety than almost any other life event — and understandably so. The dramatic hormonal changes of pregnancy affect skin in multiple ways, often changing your skin type, triggering new concerns like melasma and acne and altering your tolerance to products you previously used without issue. At the same time, concerns about ingredient safety for the developing baby require a thorough reassessment of your routine.

Here is a clear, clinical guide to what is safe, what to avoid and how to manage the most common pregnancy-related skin concerns.

Ingredients to Avoid During Pregnancy

Retinol and Retinoids

Retinol, retinoids and all forms of Vitamin A derivatives — including prescription tretinoin, adapalene and isotretinoin — should be avoided during pregnancy. Oral retinoids (such as Roaccutane) are teratogenic and absolutely contraindicated in pregnancy. While the evidence for topical retinol causing harm is less definitive, the precautionary principle applies and all retinol should be discontinued for the duration of pregnancy and breastfeeding. This includes products marketed as retinol alternatives containing retinyl palmitate.

High-Concentration Chemical Exfoliants

High percentages of AHAs and BHAs — including glycolic acid peels, strong salicylic acid products and professional-strength exfoliation treatments — should be avoided during pregnancy. Low concentrations of glycolic acid in rinse-off products (such as cleansers) are generally considered low risk, but leave-on treatments at higher concentrations are best avoided. Salicylic acid in particular should be avoided at high concentrations as it is a salicylate — related to aspirin.

Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone, a skin-lightening ingredient sometimes used for hyperpigmentation, has a high systemic absorption rate and should be avoided during pregnancy due to insufficient safety data.

Chemical Sunscreen Filters

Some chemical sunscreen ingredients — particularly oxybenzone and octinoxate — are endocrine disruptors with potential hormonal activity. During pregnancy, mineral sunscreens (containing zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide) are the safer choice.

Certain Essential Oils and Botanical Extracts

Some essential oils — including rosemary, sage, tea tree at high concentrations, and certain citrus oils — are traditionally avoided during pregnancy. Choose fragrance-free, simple formulas wherever possible.

Ingredients That Are Safe During Pregnancy

Hyaluronic Acid — one of the safest and most beneficial ingredients for use during pregnancy. Provides essential hydration without any systemic absorption concerns. SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Serum and HA Intensifier Multi-Glycan are both excellent, safe choices for pregnancy hydration.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) — considered safe during pregnancy and highly beneficial for managing the pigmentation changes that many women experience. SkinCeuticals Metacell Renewal B3 provides niacinamide alongside other pregnancy-safe actives.

Vitamin C — generally considered safe during pregnancy at normal skincare concentrations. SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic and Silymarin CF are appropriate for continued use. Provides the antioxidant protection that becomes particularly important during pregnancy when skin is more reactive to UV exposure.

Gentle AHAs at low concentrations — low percentages of glycolic and lactic acid in leave-on products are generally considered acceptable during pregnancy, though many practitioners advise keeping use minimal. Always check with your midwife or obstetrician if uncertain.

Mineral SPF — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide based sunscreens are the recommended choice during pregnancy. Daily SPF is particularly important as pregnancy hormones dramatically increase UV sensitivity and the risk of melasma.

Ceramides and barrier-supporting ingredients — entirely safe and highly beneficial during pregnancy when the skin barrier can be compromised by hormonal changes.

Managing Common Pregnancy Skin Concerns

Melasma (The Mask of Pregnancy)

Melasma affects up to 70% of pregnant women and is driven by the surge in oestrogen and progesterone stimulating melanocyte activity. Treatment options are limited during pregnancy — most of the most effective topical brightening ingredients (retinol, hydroquinone, strong exfoliants) are on the avoid list. The most effective approach is rigorous daily SPF with a mineral formula, Vitamin C serum in the morning, and niacinamide-containing products. Post-partum, a full melasma treatment programme can be started once breastfeeding is complete.

Pregnancy Acne

The hormonal fluctuations of the first trimester commonly trigger breakouts even in skin that has never been acne-prone. Without retinol and strong acids, management focuses on gentle twice-daily cleansing with Bioderma Sebium Foaming Gel, keeping skin clean and avoiding comedogenic products. Niacinamide helps with oil control and inflammation. Avoid high-concentration salicylic acid — low concentrations in rinse-off cleansers are generally considered lower risk but discuss with your healthcare provider.

Dry and Sensitive Skin

Many women experience increased skin dryness and sensitivity during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters. Focus on barrier support: SkinCeuticals Epidermal Repair for compromised skin, SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 for hydration, and a ceramide-rich moisturiser such as SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2 for barrier restoration.

After Pregnancy: Resuming Your Full Routine

Once you have finished breastfeeding, you can resume your full clinical routine including retinol, exfoliants and any treatments that were paused during pregnancy. If melasma developed during pregnancy, this is the time to begin a comprehensive pigmentation treatment programme.
