How to Build a Skincare Routine for Hyperpigmentation

Skincare routine for hyperpigmentation dark spots treatment

Hyperpigmentation — the appearance of dark spots, uneven skin tone and patches of discolouration — is one of the most common skin concerns we see at Esthe Clinic. Whether it is post-acne marks, sun damage, melasma or hormonal pigmentation, the good news is that with the right routine and the right ingredients, significant improvement is achievable.

Why Does Hyperpigmentation Happen?

Pigmentation occurs when melanocytes are triggered to overproduce melanin. This can be caused by UV exposure (sun spots), inflammation (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation following acne), hormonal changes (melasma) or the natural ageing process.

The Key Ingredients That Work

Vitamin C — inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase responsible for melanin production while neutralising the free radicals that trigger pigmentation. SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic and Discoloration Defense both use Vitamin C as a core active.

Tranexamic Acid — increasingly well-evidenced for treating stubborn melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation. SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense combines tranexamic acid with kojic acid and niacinamide.

Niacinamide — reduces the transfer of melanin to skin cells and brightens overall complexion. Found in SkinCeuticals Metacell Renewal B3 and Discoloration Defense.

Retinol — accelerates cell turnover, shedding pigmented surface cells. ZO Skin Health Retinol Skin Brightener targets this dual action specifically.

Chemical exfoliants (AHAs) — dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, accelerating the removal of surface pigmentation. SkinCeuticals Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight and ZO Skin Health Exfoliation Accelerator are both excellent.

A Complete Hyperpigmentation Routine

Morning: Cleanser → SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic or Silymarin CF → SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense → Moisturiser → SkinCeuticals Advanced Brightening UV Defense SPF 50

Evening: Double Cleanse → SkinCeuticals Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight (2-3 nights) OR ZO Skin Health Retinol Skin Brightener (alternate nights) → Moisturiser

How Long Will It Take?

With a consistent clinical routine, most people see visible improvement in 8 to 12 weeks. Deeper pigmentation can take 6 months or more. The key is consistency and never skipping SPF.
