What Is Niacinamide and Why Does Your Skin Need It?

Skincare serum ingredients niacinamide clinical

If you follow skincare at all, you will have noticed niacinamide appearing in more and more products over the last few years. It has gone from a niche ingredient to one of the most universally recommended actives in both consumer and clinical skincare — and unlike many trends, the enthusiasm is fully justified by the science. Here is everything you need to know about niacinamide and how to use it effectively.

What Is Niacinamide?

Niacinamide is a form of Vitamin B3 — an essential water-soluble vitamin that plays a critical role in cellular energy metabolism. When applied topically to skin, niacinamide has a remarkable range of clinically evidenced benefits that make it one of the most versatile active ingredients available. It is also exceptionally well-tolerated — suitable for sensitive skin, rosacea-prone skin, acne-prone skin and ageing skin alike. This combination of broad efficacy and high tolerability is rare in skincare and explains niacinamide's growing clinical significance.

What Does Niacinamide Actually Do for Skin?

Reduces the Appearance of Pores

Niacinamide is one of the very few ingredients with clinical evidence for reducing the visible size of pores. It does this by regulating sebum production, reducing the congestion that causes pores to stretch, and improving skin texture around pore openings. Results are typically visible within 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use.

Controls Oil and Shine

By modulating sebum production at the sebaceous gland level, niacinamide significantly reduces excess surface oil and shine — without over-drying or stripping the skin barrier. This makes it particularly valuable for combination and oily skin types.

Brightens Skin Tone and Fades Dark Spots

Niacinamide inhibits the transfer of melanin from melanocytes to keratinocytes — the process that creates visible pigmentation at the skin's surface. With consistent use over 8 to 12 weeks, it visibly improves uneven skin tone, reduces the appearance of dark spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and enhances overall skin radiance.

Strengthens the Skin Barrier

Niacinamide stimulates the production of ceramides and other lipids that form the skin's protective moisture barrier. A stronger barrier means less transepidermal water loss, reduced sensitivity to external irritants and more resilient, comfortable skin. This barrier-supporting action makes niacinamide an excellent ingredient for dry, sensitive and compromised skin types.

Reduces Redness and Inflammation

The anti-inflammatory properties of niacinamide make it beneficial for rosacea-prone skin, blemish-prone skin and any skin type dealing with chronic background redness. It calms the inflammatory pathways that cause visible redness without triggering the sensitisation that some other anti-inflammatory ingredients can cause.

Supports Anti-Ageing

Niacinamide stimulates collagen production, improves skin elasticity and reduces the appearance of fine lines over time. While not as potent as retinol or Vitamin C in this role, its contribution to overall skin health — particularly barrier function and hydration — creates the optimal environment for long-term anti-ageing results.

How Does Niacinamide Compare to Other Actives?

Niacinamide's great advantage over other actives is its versatility and tolerability. Retinol is more powerful for anti-ageing but requires a careful introduction process and can cause irritation. Vitamin C is more effective for antioxidant protection and brightening but can be less stable and less tolerated by sensitive skin. Niacinamide does a little of everything with virtually no irritation risk — making it an ideal daily staple alongside more targeted actives.

It layers exceptionally well with most other ingredients, including hyaluronic acid, ceramides and SPF. It can be used morning and evening and is suitable for all skin types. The one caveat sometimes raised is using high-concentration niacinamide alongside Vitamin C — at very high concentrations both can theoretically form nicotinic acid, though in practice this is rarely relevant at the concentrations used in well-formulated products.
