One of the most common questions we get at Esthe Clinic is: in what order should I apply my skincare? It sounds like a simple question but the answer matters more than most people realise. Apply products in the wrong order and you can physically block lighter, active formulas from penetrating the skin — or create combinations that reduce the effectiveness of key ingredients. Here is the definitive clinical guide to layering skincare correctly.
The Fundamental Rule: Thinnest to Thickest
The overriding principle of skincare layering is to apply products from the thinnest texture to the thickest. Thinner, water-based formulas penetrate the skin first and deliver their active ingredients directly to skin cells. Thicker formulas — creams, oils and SPF — are applied last and act as a seal that locks in the layers beneath. If you apply a thick cream before a lightweight serum, the cream creates a physical barrier that prevents the serum from penetrating the skin effectively.
Morning Routine: The Correct Order
Step 1 — Cleanser
Always start with clean skin. Your morning cleanse removes overnight sebum build-up, any skincare residue from the night before and anything that has transferred from your pillow. Choose a formula appropriate for your skin type — a gentle cream cleanser for dry and sensitive skin, a foaming or gel cleanser for oily and combination skin. SkinCeuticals Simply Clean, ZO Skin Health Exfoliating Cleanser and Bioderma Sensibio Foaming Gel are all excellent morning cleansers.
Step 2 — Toner (Optional)
If you use a toner, apply it immediately after cleansing to a clean face. Toners remove any residual cleanser, restore skin pH and prepare the skin to absorb your serum more effectively. Apply with a cotton pad or pat directly into skin with your hands. Allow to absorb fully before the next step.
Step 3 — Vitamin C Serum or Antioxidant
Your Vitamin C serum or antioxidant goes on before everything else because it needs direct contact with skin to neutralise free radicals and penetrate effectively. Apply to dry skin and allow 60 seconds for absorption. SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic, Silymarin CF, Phloretin CF and ZO Skin Health 10% Vitamin C Self-Activating all belong at this step.
Step 4 — Treatment Serum
If you use an additional targeted serum — for pigmentation, redness, pore refinement or hydration — it goes on after your Vitamin C but before moisturiser. Examples include SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense, Hydrating B5 Serum, HA Intensifier Multi-Glycan, ZO Skin Health Rozatrol or ZO Skin Health Firming Serum. If using multiple serums, apply the thinnest texture first.
Step 5 — Eye Cream or Eye Serum
Eye treatments go on before your face moisturiser so they make direct contact with the delicate skin around the eye without a barrier of face cream on top. Apply with your ring finger using a gentle tapping motion — never drag or rub the eye area. ZO Skin Health Growth Factor Eye Serum, Eye Brightening Creme and SkinCeuticals AGE Advanced Eye all belong at this step.
Step 6 — Moisturiser
Your moisturiser seals in all the active layers beneath it and provides hydration and barrier support. Apply evenly across the face and neck. If you use a facial oil, apply it after your moisturiser — oils seal everything in beneath them.
Step 7 — SPF (Last Step, Every Morning)
SPF is always the absolute final step in your morning routine — after all other products have been applied and absorbed. Applying anything on top of SPF can dilute it or compromise its effectiveness. Apply generously and evenly, including the neck and any exposed areas. Wait until it has fully absorbed before applying makeup. SkinCeuticals Advanced Brightening UV Defense SPF 50, Oil Shield UV Defense SPF 50, ZO Skin Health Smart Tone SPF 50 and ZO Skin Health Daily Sheer SPF 50 all belong here.
Evening Routine: The Correct Order
Step 1 — Makeup Remover or Micellar Water
Remove makeup and SPF before cleansing. Bioderma Sensibio H2O or Sebium H2O applied with a cotton pad removes all surface products gently without friction. Never try to remove heavy makeup with your cleanser alone — it is not formulated for this and the rubbing required causes unnecessary stress to the skin.
Step 2 — Cleanser
Follow with your regular cleanser to ensure all residue is removed and skin is completely clean for your evening actives.
Step 3 — Exfoliating Treatment (2-3 Nights per Week)
On exfoliation nights, apply your chemical exfoliant after cleansing and before any other products. Leave-on exfoliants like SkinCeuticals Glycolic 10 Renew Overnight are applied and left on overnight — do not apply other products immediately on top. Exfoliating pads like ZO Skin Health Complexion Renewal Pads are wiped across the face and left to dry before proceeding to the next step.
Step 4 — Retinol (Alternate Nights)
On nights you are not exfoliating, apply your retinol after cleansing and toning. Allow it to fully absorb before applying moisturiser. Never apply retinol immediately before or after a strong exfoliating acid in the same session — use them on separate nights.
Step 5 — Treatment Serum
Any additional evening serums go on after retinol but before moisturiser. ZO Skin Health Growth Factor Serum, SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective and SkinCeuticals Resveratrol B E Night Serum all belong at this step.
Step 6 — Eye Treatment
Apply your evening eye treatment before face moisturiser, as in your morning routine. ZO Skin Health Intense Eye Creme and SkinCeuticals Eye Balm belong here.
Step 7 — Moisturiser
Your night moisturiser is typically richer than your daytime formula — your skin does its best barrier repair work overnight and benefits from more intensive support. SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2, ZO Skin Health Recovery Creme and ZO Skin Health Hydrating Creme are all excellent evening moisturisers.
Key Rules to Remember
Never apply SPF in the evening — it serves no purpose and will prevent your evening actives from working properly. Never mix retinol and exfoliating acids in the same session. Always allow each layer to absorb for at least 30 to 60 seconds before applying the next. Less is more — a six-product routine applied in the correct order will always outperform a ten-product routine applied incorrectly.
